ASCO/CAP Guidelines Recommendations for HER-2 Testing
In December 2006, the American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists (ASCO/CAP) issued guidelines to improve the accuracy of HER-2 testing in invasive breast cancer and its utility as a predictive marker.
As part of the guidelines, the panel recommended that laboratory assays or modifications to laboratory assays for HER-2 testing should be validated and that laboratories should follow standardized operating procedures. Compliance with new testing criteria should be monitored through accreditation standards, external proficiency testing and competency assessments.
The panel also recommended that HER-2 testing be performed in a CAP-accredited laboratory or in a laboratory that meets the accreditation and proficiency testing requirements set out by the guidelines. For further information about the ASCO/CAP guidelines, visit ASCO online.
